The water temperature, the villa gardens, even the mood of the towns along the shore — all of it shifts with the seasons. Spring is, in our view, the finest time to be on Lake Como. The lake wakes up gradually — April brings the first warm days and the garden blooms at Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi d'Eril, May fills out into a sustained run of warm, clear weather, and June tips into early summer with long evenings and light that stays until well past eight.
The crowds have not yet arrived in force. The restaurants are fully open and at their best. The azaleas and rhododendrons at Villa Carlotta — over 150 varieties — are in full bloom from late April through May, creating a flowering along the central shore that is one of the most beautiful sights on the lake. The water is still too cold for swimming in April, but perfectly swimmable by late May and June.
From the boat, spring light on Lake Como is extraordinary — clear, at a low angle even at midday, turning the mountains into crisp theatre backdrops and making the villas glow against the green hillsides. For photography, there is no better time of year.

Long sunny days with temperatures between 25°C and 31°C, warm water perfect for swimming, restaurants and bars open late, and a buzzing atmosphere in every lakeside town. If this is your first time visiting and you want the full, glamorous, Lake Como experience — summer is when it happens.
The trade-off is crowds. July and August bring visitors in very large numbers, particularly from Milan, which is only an hour away. The public ferries are packed. The waterfront restaurants in Bellagio and Varenna have queues. Parking on the lakeside roads becomes essentially impossible. The villages remain beautiful — they always are — but the solitude is gone.
From the boat, however, summer is wonderful. On the water, the crowds disappear entirely. Your private boat is your private world — you can anchor in a quiet bay, swim in 22°C water, and watch the summer spectacle from a comfortable distance. The heat, which can feel oppressive in the towns, feels like pure luxury when you are lying on the sunbeds with the lake breeze moving over you.
One specific consideration for summer: the lake winds. Lake Como's famous breva (afternoon south wind) and tivano (morning north wind) are consistent in summer and can create choppy conditions in the afternoon, particularly in the central lake. We plan our routes to account for this — it is nothing to worry about, but early morning departures in summer tend to offer the smoothest water.
September on Lake Como is, for many of our regulars, the best month of the year. The summer crowds have thinned. The temperatures remain warm — typically 20 to 25°C, still perfectly comfortable on the water — and the light has changed in a way that is genuinely difficult to describe. It is softer, lower, more golden. The mountains take on a different quality in September light: more dramatic, more dimensional, more present.
The water stays warm enough for swimming through mid-September, making it ideal if you want the Villas Escape or La Dolce Vista with a swim stop. The restaurants are at their best — the summer rush is over, the chefs are relaxed, and the seasonal menus shift to the richer, deeper flavours of autumn: lake fish, truffles from the surrounding hills, the last of the tomatoes and the first of the mushrooms.
October brings the autumn foliage — the forests above Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio turn vivid shades of orange, red and yellow, creating a dramatic backdrop to the blue water below. It is one of the most photographed times on the lake, and from the boat, the effect is extraordinary: a wall of colour reflected in the water, the Alps behind, the villas in their autumn quiet.
Late October sees some seasonal businesses begin to close, so check ahead for specific restaurants or villa openings. But for boat tours, October is fully operational and often offers our most atmospheric cruises of the year.

Temperatures drop to between 3°C and 12°C, many hotels, restaurants and villa gardens close for the season, and the lake takes on a quiet, contemplative quality that most visitors never see. The surrounding mountains become snow-covered. The villages, stripped of summer tourists, return to their local rhythms. On a clear winter morning, with the lake perfectly still and steam rising off the water against the white Alps, the lake is hauntingly beautiful.
We do operate boat tours in winter for those who specifically want this experience — and some guests seek it out, particularly for special occasions: a sunrise proposal, a photography session in the winter fog, a private cruise through the stillness of a December morning. It is not for everyone, but it is genuinely unforgettable for those who choose it.
Practically speaking: dress warmly, choose a tour of no more than 2 hours, and set your expectations accordingly. Several lakeside restaurants close entirely between November and March, so lakeside dining tours are best planned for the warmer months.

If you want the best weather and the most beautiful gardens: choose May or early June. The lake is calm, the light is superb, the villas are at their most photogenic and the crowds are manageable.
If you want warmth, swimming and long summer evenings: June is the ideal balance — warm enough for everything, but before the peak July and August rush. If July or August is the only option, book your tour for the morning and enjoy the afternoon heat from the water.
If you want fewer crowds and extraordinary autumn colour: September is the answer. Many experienced Italy travellers consider it the finest month on the lake. The light alone is worth the trip.
If you want a special occasion in a completely different setting: October and even early November offer a Lake Como most visitors never see — quieter, more intimate and more authentically Italian.
