Freedom

The Grand Tour

One full day.
The whole lake is yours.

Lake Como is 46 kilometres long. Its two branches take you from the glamour of the south shore to the wilder, quieter upper lake β€” through landscapes that change completely as you move north. One hour is enough for the highlights. Eight hours is enough for everything.

The Grand Tour gives you the entire boat for the entire day, with your English-speaking captain as your guide. There is no fixed route, no schedule to keep and nowhere you have to be. You decide where to go, when to stop and how long to stay. This is Lake Como without compromise.

Before you set off, your captain will talk through the lake with you β€” the villages, the villas, the hidden corners β€” and help you shape a day that fits exactly what your group wants to do.

What You Can Do

Eight hours of
pure freedom

The Grand Tour has no agenda except yours. Here is what a full day on Lake Como makes possible.

πŸ›

The Grand Villas

A full day means you can cruise past every major villa on the lake β€” not just the highlights of the south shore but the grand estates of the central lake and the quieter residences of the upper branches.

🏘

Village Stops

Dock in Bellagio, wander Varenna's cliffside streets, explore the fishing village of Peschiera Maraglio or the medieval lanes of Gravedona. With 8 hours, you can visit two or three villages at your leisure.

🍝

Lunch or Dinner Ashore

Arrive at a lakeside restaurant by boat β€” Villa d'Este, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, a local trattoria in Varenna. Your captain can help with timing and recommendations. The full day gives you time to linger over a proper Italian lunch.

🏊

Swimming Stops

The lake reaches 22Β°C in summer. Your captain knows the clearest, calmest spots β€” away from the ferry routes and the crowds. A full day means you can swim more than once, or simply drift in the water for as long as you want.

πŸ’§

Hidden Waterfalls

The Nesso waterfall, the Orrido di Bellano, the cascades above Varenna β€” these are places almost impossible to reach on foot but extraordinary from the water. A full day means you can visit more than one.

🍦

A Gelato in Bellagio

Sometimes the best moments are the small ones. Docking in Bellagio at midmorning, before the crowds arrive, and eating a gelato on the waterfront while the lake sparkles β€” this is exactly what 8 hours allows.

πŸŒ…

Morning Light & Evening Gold

A full day on the lake means you experience both the sharp morning light on the mountains and the warm gold of late afternoon β€” two completely different lakes, on the same day.

πŸ—Ί

The Upper Lake

Most tours never leave the south. With 8 hours, you can push north into the upper lake β€” wilder, less visited, with a completely different character. The mountains close in, the water deepens and the villages feel truly untouched.

πŸ“Έ

Photography at the Right Light

The most extraordinary light on Lake Como is in the first two hours of morning and the last two before sunset. A Grand Tour departure means you can plan your route around it β€” positioning the boat for the shot that no postcard captures.

A Sample Day

How a Grand Tour
day might unfold

Every Grand Tour is different β€” this is just one version of many. Your captain will help you shape the day that makes sense for your group.

09:00
Departure from your pier
Your captain meets you at the pier, runs through the day's possibilities and casts off. The lake in the morning is often glassy-calm β€” perfect for the first hour of cruising.
Any pier on the lake
09:30
The Grand Villas β€” south and central lake
Cruise past Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, Villa Oleandra and the grand estates of the Tremezzina shore. The morning light on the stone façades is extraordinary. Your captain narrates the history of each one.
10:30
Nesso Waterfall
The hidden Orrido di Nesso β€” a dramatic limestone gorge where a waterfall drops directly into the lake. Seen from the water, with the morning still quiet, it's one of the most striking sights on the lake.
East shore
11:30
Swimming stop
Your captain anchors in a quiet bay β€” away from the ferry routes, sheltered from the wind. The lake is clear and cool. Take your time.
Towels on request
13:00
Lunch in Bellagio or Varenna
Dock in Bellagio or Varenna and take 90 minutes ashore for lunch β€” risotto al pesce persico, lake fish, a glass of local wine. Your captain can recommend and help coordinate timing with a restaurant.
~90 minutes ashore
14:30
The upper lake
Push north into the upper lake β€” Dongo, Gravedona, the quieter villages that most visitors never reach. The landscape changes completely: the mountains steepen, the water deepens, the crowds disappear entirely.
Upper Lake Como
16:30
Second swim or gelato stop
Another swim in the afternoon warmth, or a quick stop ashore for gelato in whichever village has caught your eye. The afternoon light on the lake is warmer and more golden than the morning.
17:00
Return cruise β€” golden hour
The journey home β€” unhurried, with the late afternoon light turning the lake copper and the mountains violet. Your captain knows the most scenic return route.

Where You Can Go

The whole lake
in a single day

These are just some of the destinations a Grand Tour makes possible. Your captain will help you build the day around the ones that interest you most.

🏘
Bellagio
Pearl of the Lake Β· Central lake
The most celebrated village on the lake β€” cobblestone salite, lakefront promenades and the gardens of Villa Melzi. Best visited by boat before the day-trippers arrive.
🏠
Varenna
Cliffside village Β· East shore
Arguably the most beautiful village on the lake β€” coloured houses clinging to the cliff, a waterfront walkway carved into the rock, and some of the finest restaurants on the lake.
β›΅
Menaggio
Central lake Β· West shore
A relaxed lakeside town with a wide promenade, an excellent market on Tuesdays, and a quieter character than Bellagio. A favourite of those who know the lake well.
πŸ’§
Nesso
Hidden waterfall Β· East shore
The Orrido di Nesso β€” a dramatic limestone gorge where a waterfall drops directly into the lake. Almost impossible to reach on foot. From the boat, extraordinary.
πŸ›
Villa del Balbianello
Iconic villa Β· Lenno
The most dramatic villa on the lake β€” occupying the tip of a wooded promontory, best seen by boat as you round the headland and the loggia appears above the cypresses.
πŸ—Ί
Gravedona & the Upper Lake
Upper Lake Β· North Como
The upper lake has a completely different character β€” wilder, quieter, with medieval churches and fishing villages that feel untouched by tourism. Most visitors never reach it. You will.

FAQ

Questions about the
Lake Como Grand Tour

Is €1,500 per person or for the whole boat? +

€1,500 is the total price for the entire private boat, for up to 7 guests. Fuel, captain and water are all included. Extras such as champagne, food or flowers are agreed and priced separately when you book.

Do we have to follow a fixed route? +

Not at all β€” that's the point of the Grand Tour. Before departure, your captain will talk through the lake with you and help shape a day based on what your group wants to see and do. You can change direction at any point during the day.

Can we visit more than one village? +

Yes β€” and most Grand Tour guests do. With 8 hours, you can comfortably visit two villages with proper time ashore in each, plus swim stops, villa cruising and the return journey. Your captain will help you pace the day so nothing feels rushed.

Can we have lunch or dinner during the tour? +

Absolutely β€” and we'd encourage it. Arriving at a lakeside restaurant by private boat is one of the finest things Lake Como offers. Your captain can recommend restaurants and help coordinate timing. Restaurant costs are separate from the boat hire.

What time does the tour start and end? +

Departure time is flexible β€” you choose when to set off. Most guests depart between 9am and 10am to make the most of the full day, but we can accommodate earlier departures for those who want the lake at sunrise. The tour runs for 8 hours from departure.

Can we reach the upper lake on this tour? +

Yes β€” and the Grand Tour is the only one of our experiences where a full exploration of the upper lake is genuinely possible. The upper branches of Lake Como have a completely different character from the south, and with 8 hours you can go north properly and still have time for everything else.

Is this suitable for a special occasion? +

The Grand Tour is one of our most popular choices for proposals, anniversaries, milestone birthdays and honeymoons. Eight hours gives us time to set up everything properly β€” champagne, flowers, live music, the perfect moment. Tell us when booking and we'll coordinate every detail.
